"Let's eat lunch outside today," I said as I used an entire loaf of bread to make an assortment of sandwiches – peanut butter and jelly (Jordan, Kaelyn), ham & cheese/no Whip (TJ), turkey & cheese/Whip (me, Kyra, Jaiden).

"Like a pick-i-nick?" Kaelyn asked.

They all froze. Deer, headlights, and all that jazz.

"Mmmhmm. You guys go get a couple of blankets and spread them out in the backyard."

They cheered, then scattered.

It's such a simple thing, but little kids eat that shit up like it's the coolest thing ever. I know this to be true, because through a sticky mouthful of PB & J Jordan turned to me and exclaimed, "This is the coolest thing EVER!"

Jaiden kept making this weird orangutan/dog/sheep sound and crazy-haired Kyra couldn't stop snorting when she laughed.

Diego and Spunky prowled: You better watch those sammiches, bitches.

And try as we might, we couldn't get just one perfect picture where everyone was both smiling and looking at the camera at the same time.

But these were pretty funny, and are more reflective of the daily madness and mayhem in the house of the Smart Ones:

(notice Frank's socks and sandals, Nancy. Only around the house.)

Today pretty much rocked. It was the coolest thing ever.

  1. that's so awesome. i am soOOO looking forward to the day when this household becomes more FUN than DRAMA (three 3 1/2 y/olds can make a girl quite, um, pessimistic). awesome, i tell yah.

(again, that frank…bakes cakes, gets you NERDS for the love of GOD, AND a cutie pie??? jesus, woman!)

  2. Little kids eat that shit up? Dude, that *is* the coolest thing ever. I want to go on a picnic with you! I'll take the turkey/cheese please!

  3. I'm all smiles just thinking about the picnic days. I should have a picnic tomorrow, as it's my "work from home" day and always hard on the girls to have so little of my attention. Maybe I'll take a real "lunch hour" and do that same thing. They'll fucking love it – you are right!

The pictures definitely show how it truly did "rock" today!

  4. Ha! As I wrote the comment, I must have missed the note about the socks and sandals and now I'm cracking up. But more so because ~I~ wear socks/sandals around the house too – as I usually have socks on in the house and when I go outside – I slip those exact type of sandals on – my ADIDAS slip ons. heh. It's like you "caught" me by showing this picture!

  5. At least Frank isn't wearing dress socks and sandals…he's doing it the hip and cool way!!!

I love the falling all over each other pictures better…I have a Christmas pic like that…makes for great cards!!!

  6. OMG, I love, love, love your blog and this post. What a wonderful day! Next big family outing is a camp-out in the back yard. Come on, can you handle it????
